For beginners, courses such as the City and Guilds Basic Refrigeration and Air conditioning courses are ideal and gives those with a technical aptitude, but no previous experience, an understanding of the environmental and legal implications of these systems and safe handling. Other short air conditioning courses over periods of 10 and 15 days allow students the chance to cover the skills needed for electrical servicing and maintenance of the air-conditioning units.

Other courses such as CITB Essential Electrics, which cover the basics of these systems, or the City and Guilds 17th Edition IEE Regs, aimed at anyone who needs electrical knowledge of BS 7671 may be taken separately, or are often offered as part of the aforementioned courses. Such courses provide those with no previous formal training, or those in need of a specific air conditioning training the essentials in the air-conditioning field.

F-Gas Regulation air conditioning courses are also very popular and are the basic requirement for anyone working with air conditioning equipment. Other longer qualifications, such as the NVQ in Mechanical Engineering in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Certificate and Diploma in Refrigeration Air Conditioning and Pump Systems among others offer longer, more in-depth courses and give a deeper knowledge of the process. These often take up to two years, but do offer a level 2 and 3 NVQ. Many people engage in shorter courses first before deciding on furthering themselves with the more time heavy qualifications.
