A self-employed experienced plumber can earn between £27,000 - £35,000+ a year depending on how much work he or she does. An average wage for a plumber, working for a firm with a couple years experience would range from £25,000+. To become a qualified plumber, the following qualifications would need to be gained, although the technical certificates are not considered to prove that you are a qualified plumber, but help towards an NVQ:

  • City & Guilds (6089) - NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Mechanical Engineering Services - Plumbing (Domestic)
  • City & Guilds (6129) - Technical Certificates Level 2 Basic Plumbing Studies and Level 3 Plumbing Studies

A career in plumbing is a hands-on job and massively relied upon, as they're dealing with the health of others. Plumbers have a key role in the trade industry, as every new build will need clean drinking water, drainage, toilet facilities. Plumbers can further their career into gas fitting, heating systems and drainage system design.

There is a shortage of plumbers and it seems that 50% of those who take on a plumbing college course tend not to complete it and look for an alternative career. Also within the plumbing industry, the average age of plumbers is relatively high and shows that there are more plumbers leaving the trade than actually joining it.
